Day One

Mine most commonly watched show - The Walking Dead

Why? Because I am preparing for a zombie apocalypse - that’s why.

I cannot help but wonder if I would be weak or strong.

Pessimistic or optimistic.

A quitter or a fighter.

I like to believe that I would be the latter.

When this world comes to a screeching halt, all thanks to the living dead (even though it could all end with flames from a comet - similar but different to dinosaurs - or end with the world flooding, due to global warming. Shit, is that even a real thing?) So yeah, I am putting my money towards zombies ending this boujee planet we call Earth.

So, what the hell? Here’s my zombie apocalypse (or possibly other short stories) for 2023.

And now, it’s time for the end to begin…

_______________

This was not how it was supposed to end.

A mantra repeated through my mind as I ran through the forest.

I have three of them right behind me. I could feel their icy, dead breath on my neck as if they were already on top of me.

Biting. Groaning. Breathing - but never using the same oxygen as I do to live.

That previously mentioned element is pumping, scorching, and burning through my veins but keeping the lungs lit as I run for my life.

I am half tempted to stop and finally accept the inevitable. We’re all meant to die one day, so why the hell not right here and right now? Because of that one damn mantra repeating through my mind with each stomp to the frigid ground.

This was not how it was supposed to end.

It has only been 24 hours since the world came crashing down. I was commuting to work as a secretary. Completing the same boring tasks, day in and day out with the bare minimum effort to earn a paycheck at the end of each week.

I was halfway to work when the red tail lights flashed before me. Great, an accident. This will only delay me further from arriving at work on time. Sure, I have a habit of showing up a few minutes late but anytime there’s a traffic jam to work - it only further delays my clock-in time by another 15 to 20 minutes.

However, this was no normal traffic accident. In fact, I saw people running on the highway, right past my Subaru.
